GEOMETRIC PAINTINGS in WATERCOLOR GOUACHE AND CASEIN

I've been revisiting some mediums I was trained to use, as an illustration student at Paier College of Art in Hamden Connecticut. What I appreciate about watercolor gouache is its beautiful, clean flatness. Casein thrills me even more, as it embodies an oil paint-like quality, in its depth of pigmentation and color brilliance. Seems perfect for designing these otherworldly geometrical abstractions that I so much enjoy rendering. Moon slivers, squares, triangles, diamonds, circles, spirals, all with clean edges. Curved, wriggling, pencil-wide lines intersecting straight lines, geometrical shapes and solid planes. Makes one heady to view, for they create an arresting depth that one can imagine stretches in all directions, possibly to infinity. In this series, when a sovereign shape intersects another, color changes often occur, clashing off each other. INK DRAWINGS

When working as an Art/Rehab Therapist in Napa, particularly in 2004, I held many a music and tea group for my patients. During this time I queued up cds in their cases, and the patients listened to their favorite rock and roll tunes while sipping tea. I found myself doodling with pen and paper, using the circular center and edges of cds and rectangular cd cases to design intricate and repeating lines and curves in space. I formed faces out of a beginning gestural line, and carefully inked items that I had on hand in front of me, such as ink pens, etc. Tracing my hands became a common theme in the drawings. The words I blocked out came from the songs I was hearing at the time I was drawing. It was a pleasurable pastime for me. I kept the drawings on my computer and forgot about them for a long while. Watercolor Giclees: "Hot Pink Fuchsia" at Napa River Inn

I sold four 30" x 40" giclees of this piece, "Hot Pink Fuchsia", in September 2013. So excited to be a local Wine Country Artist, and to have my work hanging in the historic Napa River Inn! It was thrilling to see my tiny original 5" x 7" watercolor skillfully enlarged, printed and transformed into a vibrant and strong 30" x 40" stretched, gallery-wrapped canvas giclee! Museum quality materials, hardwood stretchers, an image that is permeated into the canvas, not laying on top of it; done by Dacor Imaging in Napa. Thanks to Arts Council Napa Valley, Kristina Young, and master printer Dave Courtney for helping make it all possible! (For those that noticed: the piece was reversed from the original, and the signature removed, before printed as large giclees.) Artists' Reception was held in April 2013 at Silo's.
